The Hooters dance again
Bossa nova's 50th birthday free concert in Brazil
| | In 1969, Gilberto's new musical style reached a worldwide audience with the release of "Girl from Ipanema," one of the greatest hits of bossa nova. But different from samba, a music genre popular among the working class in Brazil, bossa nova often speaks of love, the beach and beautiful women and is described by many as the music of the Brazilian middle and upper classes. source: xinhuanet.com |
Nine Inch Nails Uploads New Album to BitTorrent Sites
| | Nine Inch Nails has released its new album, Ghosts I-IV, online and in a somewhat Radiohead-eque way. You'll recall Radiohead released its In Rainbows album with "you" naming the price. Nine Inch Nails doesn't go quite that far, but its still the sort of experimentation more bands should be trying with digital distribution becoming more popular. source: hiphop-elements.com |

David Gray brings brightness to city
| | WITH his relaxing vocals and pleasing melodies, David Gray is the last person in the world you'd expect to enrage anyone.Nevertheless, that's exactly what the Sale singer-songwriter managed to do at the Corn Exchange last night."I had tickets for this but I'm having to work," wailed a member of the venue's security staff. "I'm absolutely raging."Those not hindered by employment obligations were treated to a terrific evening of folk rock, which was kicked off by talented newcomer Beth Rowley. The Bristol singer's support slot coincided with the release of her new single, Oh My Life.Backed by a band that includes saxophonist Ben Castle, son of Record Breakers legend Roy, Rowley proved that she has a voice equal in volume to her bouncing blonde locks. Her debut album, Little Dreamer, is due out in May and, on this evidence, it should be well worth a listen. But while the audience gave Rowley an enthusiastic reception, there was only one musician they really wanted to see.Dressed in a black suit, Gray made a low-key entrance, walking on stage alone with his acoustic guitar and giving the briefest of introductions to his first song."I'm going to start at the beginning," he said, before playing Shine, a particularly mellow number from A Century Ends, his 1993 debut album. This was greeted with rapturous applause.Gray was then joined on stage by his backing group for Living Room, another of the musician's early efforts. It was perhaps telling that Gray performed Babylon, still his biggest hit, so early in the set. While he's probably morally obliged to give it an airing at every gig, he was determined not to let his fans leave with "for crying out loud" ringing in their ears – although similar sentiments were expressed by gridlocked motorists trying to leave the venue afterwards. While he's undoubtedly an extremely talented musician and lyricist, Gray may need to work a little on some of his banter. One meandering introduction, which included musngs on "the hypocrisy of society", caused one fan to mumble: "Blah, blah, blah. Stop talking and just get on with it."Thankfully, he seemed to get the message and launched into the considerably rockier, at least by Gray's standards, You're the World to Me.Along with Babylon, The One I Love is one of only two songs to have given Gray a top-ten hit. Its lyrics certainly struck a chord with the romantics in the crowd.Gray then showed his versatility as a musician by taking a seat behind the piano for Life In Slow Motion, a beautiful song that truly lives up to its name.Last year, Gray released a greatest hits album, but don't let that fool you into thinking his career is winding down. He's not had three chart-topping records for nothing and, at least as far as last night's audience and a disgruntled security guard are concerned, he's still the one they love. Janet Jackson returns to No. 1 with new album debut
| | Worldwide 100 million-selling megastar Janet Jackson returns to Soundscan’s #1 position on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as her Island Def Jam album debut ‘Discipline’ enters at the top on first week sales of 181,075 units, it was announced today by Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. ‘Discipline’ marks Janet’s first #1 Soundscan album debut in nearly seven years, since ‘All For You’ in May 2001. “Janet delivered an amazing album and Island Def Jam is on a mission to deliver big results for her in every way,” said Mr. Reid. "Janet is musical royalty who only deserves the very best.”‘Discipline’ was launched on the morning of the album release (February 26th) with a live performance at the Nokia Theatre on New York’s Times Square, broadcast on ABC’s Good Morning America. Another Times Square performance happened that afternoon, broadcast by MTV’s TRL. Just a few blocks away, pandemonium took over Best Buy for Janet’s in-store CD signing event, which attracted 5000 fans. Across the country two days later (Thursday), Janet stopped traffic again at her Virgin Megastore CD signing event. Later that night on CNN, she was the exclusive guest on Larry King Live. An appearance on the Ellen Show followed the next morning (Friday). Janet’s appearance on the Tyra Banks Show airs March 4, and that same night she is the lead guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live.“She a good bad girl,” screamed USA Today’s headline of its 3 album review by Steve Jones. “Sexual tension reverberates throughout Janet’s latest,” he wrote, “as she works out the kinks on the dance floor but saves some for the bedroom.” The review goes on to praise the album’s “bumping club grooves and quirky sound effects.” The week before the album’s release came news of Janet’s 2008 NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the #1 box office smash Why Did I Get Married? The comedy-drama written, produced, directed, and starring Tyler Perry, opened #1 at the box office. It is the third motion picture of Janet’s career, and her third to open at #1, following the success of Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000), and her leading title role in John Singleton’s Poetic Justice (1993). ‘Discipline’ is the 10th studio album (and overall 13th album) of Janet Jackson’s career. In addition to Rodney Jerkins, who produced “Feedback,” the new album brings together an A-list of guest producers, including Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, Stargate, Tricky Stewart, and The-Dream.Prior to album release, “Feedback” was named Janet’s biggest-selling digital single ever, and the video (by British director Saam Farahmand) is currently in major video channel rotation on BET, MTV, VH1, and VH1 Soul. In a class all by herself, 5-time Grammy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated Janet Jackson – singer, composer, producer, actor, and humanitarian – celebrated two career milestones in 2007: the 30th anniversary of her beginning as a TV star in her own right on “Good Times” (in 1977), and the 25th anniversary of her debut as a solo recording artist on A&M Records (in 1982). source:monstersandcritics.com |
My Morning Jacket Unveils New Album Track ListMy Morning
| | Jacket throws fans another sonic curveball on its new studio album, "Evil Urges," due June 10 via ATO. The 14-track set sports the most adventurous music of the Kentucky-bred rock act's career, beginning with the title track, a falsetto-driven groove-fest that opens the disc.MMJ is uncharted territory with songs like "Highly Suspicious," whose robotic funk beats and falsetto singing wouldn't sound out of place on a Rick James or Prince album. Strident rockers like "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 1" boast unusual touches, from fluttering synth lines and multi-tracked vocal parts to chopped-up beats and electro effects on the bass and guitars. Appearing near the end of the disc, "Part 2" of the track is an eight-minute-plus mash-up of disco drumming and grandiose production unlike MMJ has ever attempted.Elsewhere, "Thank You Too" conjures a lost soft rock classic from the '70s, as frontman Jim James tenderly croons, "You really saw my naked heart / you really brought out the naked part."James and his acoustic guitar are also at the forefront of "Librarian," while "Remnants" and "Aluminum Park" will satisfy fans of MMJ's straight-ahead, double-guitar attack. The group is expected to unveil new material during shows next week in Houston and Austin, Texas, the latter one of the most anticipated sets at the South by Southwest festival. Here is the track list for "Evil Urges": "Evil Urges |

The Rolling Stones, Biography
| The Rolling Stones, Biography |
|
By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman, tempering his macho showmanship with a detached, campy irony while Keith Richards and Brian Jones wrote the blueprint for sinewy, interlocking rhythm guitars. Backed by the strong yet subtly swinging rhythm section of bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts, the Stones became the breakout band of the British blues scene, eclipsing such contemporaries as the Animals and Them. Over the course of their career, the Stones never really abandoned blues, but as soon as they reached popularity in the U.K., they began experimenting musically, incorporating the British pop of contemporaries like the Beatles, Kinks, and Who into their sound. After a brief dalliance with psychedelia, the Stones re-emerged in the late '60s as a jaded, blues-soaked hard rock quintet. The Stones always flirted with the seedy side of rock & roll, but as the hippie dream began to break apart, they exposed and reveled in the new rock culture. It wasn't without difficulty, of course. Shortly after he was fired from the group, Jones was found dead in a swimming pool, while at a 1969 free concert at Altamont, a concertgoer was brutally killed during the Stones' show. But the Stones never stopped going. For the next 30 years, they continued to record and perform, and while their records weren't always blockbusters, they were never less than the most visible band of their era — certainly, none of their British peers continued to be as popular or productive as the Stones. And no band since has proven to have such a broad fan base or far-reaching popularity, and it is impossible to hear any of the groups that followed them without detecting some sort of influence, whether it was musical or aesthetic. |

As he awaits trial on gun possession charges, T.I. is speaking out about his new album "Paper Trail."The rapper recently spoke to MTV.com from his home in suburban Atlanta where he is currently on house arrest."It's a lot of bullsh-- out right now," he told MTV News via phone from Atlanta. "I'm not gonna front. I feel it's definitely about time for somebody to come back out and kick this thing back in gear. The rotation is suffering right now. I intend to do something about it. It's just a matter of when." T.I. reveals that the album's street single will be a song called "Let My Beat Pound.""That's gonna be a big record," Tip said. "It's a different record. It's a record I approached differently, and it don't sound like a typical T.I. record. It's basically about when you got your first car, one of the first things was to make sure your [sound] system was right. The love for the boomin' system. It has the sentiments of LL Cool J's 'Boomin' System,' but it kind of sounds like a Sir Mix-A-Lot [song]. It's kinda got the mood and tempo of 'Posse on Broadway,' but it's outta here." No official release date has been announced for "Paper Trail" although it is expected to hit stores in 2008. Source:hiphop-elements.com

Duffy, Rockferry
| Duffy, Rockferry | |
| By Giannis Tsagarakis | Published 02/18/2008 | Music News , New Releases | Unrated | |
| | |
She's a kohl-eyed siren from the vicinity of the geographical elbow formed by Merseyside and north Wales. She's spent a few years getting to the point where her retro-fresh 'pop noir' got noticed. Now experienced hands are helping shape her staggering but perhaps inchoate talents. Tomorrow, surely, belongs to her.But that's enough about Candie Payne. Say hello to Duffy, the 23-year-old singer born Aimee-Ann Duffy who is, as countless pundits have declared, the Sound of 2008, the New Amy Winehouse, or simply the Welsh Adele.Timing is everything in pop. Last spring, Liverpudlian Payne released I Wish I Could Have Loved You More. It bristled with great tunes and Payne's cool, smoky voice, the whole thing swaddled in Dusty in Memphis-meets-Merseybeat atmos. Blimey, it even featured Mark Ronson's production. But all those (eight) months ago, La Winehouse hadn't yet gone up in a puff of crack smoke, so we didn't need a new one. Plus, spring isn't January, so no one was writing new year/new musical broom features. Payne's album did OK but little more. But Duffy, mining the same rich seam of musical history, is rocket-powered already. And propitious alignment of the media stars aside, it's not hard to hear why: Rockferry is a fantastic album of burning blue soul. In particular, 'Mercy' is a big, booming, finger-wagging sashay worthy of the Supremes. 'Syrup and Honey', with its monochrome echoes of 'I Can't Help Falling in Love With You', is a ballad you can imagine Elvis singing. 'Hanging on Too Long' is a melodramatic belter easily the equal of anything on Back to Black The magical aura is reinforced by bafflement: how did this shy and fluttery woman-girl, from a remote, Welsh-speaking part of the country, arrive so fully formed, channelling the sounds of far-off Memphis and decades-gone Detroit? Well, it's not quite been a natural-born breeze: Duffy has been working on Rockferry for almost four years. She's co-written with producer Bernard Butler (Sixties-obsessed ex-Suede guitarist), Jimmy Hogarth (a KT Tunstall collaborator), Eg White (Ivor Novello-winning scribe for Will Young) and Steve Booker (who's written for everyone from Natalie Imbruglia to Marti Pellow; Lindsay Lohan to the Bratz dolls). And before she arrived at this retro-chic sound, Duffy was a contestant on the Welsh incarnation of X Factor, resulting in her releasing an album and an EP. On the latter (released under the name Aimee Duffy and available from iTunes), she's a mix between Evanescence and Clannad. She had a yellow-blonde feather-cut then, not a peroxide-white beehive. Her official biog - and most of her interviews - don't mention this step along the way.Brilliantly, though, on Rockferry you can't hear the joins. The closing track, 'Distant Dreamer', is an epic, orchestral stab of longing. A young Welsh woman channelling the Walker Brothers? Now that's clever.

Chris Martin: 'Not Everyone Will Like Our New Album'
| | Chris Martin says that Coldplay’s impending new album, due out this May, is so different to their first three that he’s fully aware “everyone might not like it.”The band are currently busy putting the finishing touches to the record in North London with the legendary Brian Eno, and, speaking from the studio, they made it explicit that this album should be treated as a separate entity to their other works.Guitarists Jonny Buckland explains: "We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy, and we finished that. So we wanted to do something different." The Rolling Stone, who carried out the interview, describe the album as ‘darker’ and it deals with ‘themes of loneliness and death.’ Frontman Chris Martin admitted that there is more depth to this album than previous ventures: "Whether or not it's good, we certainly started to use more colours. It's impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that. It's just the freedom to say, 'Everyone might not like this. We're into it at the moment, so let's just get it done.'" Reflecting upon Brian Eno’s involvement, Buckland continued that he brought in some quite basic but highly influential changes, such as taking more breaks."It wasn't so much that he brings like a sound or something to it. He brings lots of ideas about everything, even down to like how we structured our day," he said.Tracks that appear on the as-yet-untitled new album include ‘Cemeteries of London’, ‘Reign Of Love’, ‘Life In Technicolor’ and ‘Death and All His Friends.’ Source: gigwise.com |
Kat DeLuna Sinks Her Claws Into Akon For 9 Lives Re-Release
| | If at first you don't succeed, just add Akon.It worked for Gwen Stefani when the No Doubt frontwoman's sophomore set slumped out of the gate, critically and commercially. Her Akon-assisted second single, "The Sweet Escape," propelled the album, and the title track eventually reached the top spot on Billboard's Pop 100 chart. Now it's Latin pop singer Kat DeLuna who is turning to the Senegalese star for a boost. 'Kon just signed on to executive-produce her debut album, 9 Lives, which is set to be re-released later this spring.DeLuna recently filmed videos for the first single, "Run the Show." The Latin version is set to feature reggaeton star Don Omar meanwhile, the English version will feature Busta Rhymes, who spilled the news about Akon's role in the project. DeLuna's management also confirmed Akon's involvement as executive producer to MTV News."He gave me the call," Busta told MTV News recently from the "Run the Show" video set. "I saw the video she did for ['Whine Up'] with Elephant Man, and I like the joint she did with him, and I'm also a fan of Elephant. So at the end of the day, once they sent me the song, it really doesn't take too much for me, I just got to like the record genuinely at this stage in my career. It ain't about nothing more than me just genuinely liking what I'm a part of at this point. I liked the record and I liked her energy. She just seemed like she really enjoys what she's doing. I like to get behind things that look like it has that real star quality. She seems like she's gonna be around for a while.""I introduce a bit more of the hip-hop Kat," she explained. "It's still keeping it Latin, but the hip-hop Kat with ... a little bit of singing." source:mtv.com |
Sarah McLachlan brings baby with her to charity gig in Toronto
| | For Vancouver-based recording star Sarah McLachlan, life on the road these days involves just as much play time in the playpen as on stage."I have my eight-month-old," the Grammy-winning chanteuse said pointing to a playpen in her green room at the Air Canada Centre, where she was to perform Thursday evening at the One Night Live concert in support of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre."My 5 1/2-year-old's in school and does not like being taken out of school. This is not a good environment for her - she'd just be yelling at me all day, 'I'm bored!"'McLachlan has two children - India Ann Sushil Sood born in 2002, and Taja Summer Sood, born last June.Taja accompanied her superstar mom on the plane ride from Vancouver to Toronto and, despite a 3 1/2-hour delay on the tarmac, was an angel, said McLachlan."She was fantastic," the singer-songwriter said in the interview before the concert."She had three naps on the plane and just slept and laughed and slept. You know, you bring an infant into business class and everybody, you can just see them all going, 'Ugh,' and I said, 'She's really good, it'll be OK!"' McLachlan was to hit the stage with her good friend Josh Groban, Bryan Adams, Jann Arden and RyanDan at the concert, which has raised $12 million for Sunnybrook hospital's women and babies program.McLachlan said it's a cause that she closely identifies with after going through 21 hours of "hard back labour" with her first child and having a caesarean section with her second at B.C Women's Hospital and Health Centre."I understand the need to have a really good facility, in particular for high-risk babies and just to give mothers and babies every opportunity to get the best foot forward, and so I think this is a really good unit that they're building," said the multi-platinum artist, who is married to drummer Ashwin Sood. Groban, too, feels deeply for the cause."I wanted to be here because the women and babies program is a cause that is very close to my heart and that is supporting the development of healthy children around the world," Groban said at an afternoon news conference announcing the private donation of $8 million from a Toronto couple for the construction of two new floors for the Sunnybrook program."My foundation (the Josh Groban Foundation), based out of Los Angeles, does much of the same thing and ... I believe that for children to grow up healthy with a good education it's essential for them to have the best possible start in life," said the L.A. popera star, who was discovered by renowned Canadian music producer David Foster.Aubrey and Marla Dan, who used Sunnybrook hospital for the birth of their premature girl 15 years ago, donated the money for the new facilities, which will include a new birthing unit and neonatal intensive care unit and is expected to be completed by 2010. Aubrey Dan, a theatre producer, heads Dancap Productions in Toronto.McLachlan, who has done countless concerts and events for various charities, doesn't plan on having any more children. "I'm done," she laughed."I'm 40 now and I know emotionally and physically just what I'm capable of and what I'm capable of giving - and knowing the expectations, knowing what's needed from me, this is what I can manage and do a really good job at. Who knows, maybe I'll adopt another kid in 10 years, maybe I'll have some second wind in my late 40s or early 50s, but right now I'm pretty damn tired." With a part-time nanny and a scaled-back career, McLachlan is now focusing on her family, charity projects and a greatest hits album. The project will have some new songs, she said, which keeps her writing every day - sometimes with little Taja by her side."She, unlike my first (child), likes it when I play piano," she said with a smile."And I have a little baby piano beside mine and I sit Taja there and you have to hold her because she's still only eight months old but she just plays and plays and plays and she loves it." via: jam.canoe.ca |

Nine Inch Nails doesn't go quite that far, but its still the sort of experimentation more bands should be trying with digital distribution becoming more popular. source: hiphop-elements.com

It's kinda got the mood and tempo of 'Posse on Broadway,' but it's outta here."
Mariah Carey is still That Girl, but her album won't be titled that anymore.
Say hello to Duffy, the 23-year-old singer born Aimee-Ann Duffy who is, as countless pundits have declared, the Sound of 2008, the New Amy Winehouse, or simply the Welsh Adele.

Also up in the air is the Verve's status in the States, where the band is unsigned.Parlophone managing director Miles Leonard tells Billboard the Verve is "currently writing only," and neither he nor Summers would comment on whether the situation with EMI had been resolved. The band's last album, 1997's "Urban Hymns," has global sales of 8 million, according to Big Life, more than 1.34 million of which were in the States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

She seems like she's gonna be around for a while."
